Removing Overgrowth to prevent Rats
At NW Scotland Effective Pest Control, we take a different approach to rat control.
Our aim isn’t simply to put down bait and hope the problem disappears. We investigate why rats are present, remove the infestation and identify what needs to change to prevent them returning.
Rats and mice cause damage, contaminate food and spread disease, and a small problem can grow quickly. We deal with infestations at homes, businesses and commercial premises across Central Scotland.
We also find how rodents are getting in and fix it, so they stay out.
If you’ve noticed droppings, gnawing, scratching in walls or ceilings, or rats in your garden or bin store, it’s best to act early. Our rat control and rodent control service in Edinburgh starts with an inspection to find the activity and the entry points. We then treat the infestation and recommend practical steps to prevent a repeat visit. We work with homeowners, landlords, restaurants and other businesses.
Mice can squeeze through very small gaps, which makes them hard to keep out of homes and workplaces. They breed fast, and the signs are easy to miss until the problem is well established. Our mice control covers Edinburgh, Glasgow, Falkirk and the wider Scotland area. We identify where they are nesting and feeding, remove them, and seal the routes they use to get in.
Getting rid of rodents is only half the job. After treatment, we advise on proofing gaps and entry points, securing waste and food storage, and keeping gardens and yards less attractive to rats and mice. For commercial customers, we can also discuss ongoing monitoring to catch any problem early.

Prevention against rats from internal walls
From the initial inspection to follow-up protection, our pest control process is designed to deliver reliable results and long-term peace of mind.
Rodents come looking for food, water and shelter. Accessible bins, spilled pet or bird food, cluttered storage and small gaps in walls, floors, vents or around pipes can all attract them. Once we know what’s drawing them in, we can advise on removing it.
Size is the easiest clue. Mouse droppings are small, around the size of a grain of rice, while rat droppings are larger and chunkier. Mice can squeeze through gaps of around 6mm, about the width of a pencil, while rats need larger holes but can gnaw to enlarge them. Knowing which you have decides the treatment.
They can be. Rodents can contaminate food and surfaces with droppings and urine, and can spread diseases, including salmonella and Weil’s disease. They also gnaw cables, pipes and insulation, which can cause damage and increase fire risk. This is why it’s best to deal with them quickly.
Shop-bought traps or baits may catch a few, but they rarely solve the underlying problem, and poisons used carelessly can put children, pets and wildlife at risk. A professional can identify how they’re getting in, treat them safely and make sure the problem doesn’t return.
It depends on the size of the infestation and the type of property. Many problems need more than one visit to resolve and check, particularly with larger infestations. After inspecting, we’ll explain what’s involved and what to expect.
